2009 Heart of America
Ethics in Business Awards Program
Presented
by the Midwest Christian Counseling Center in Collaboration with Baker
University’s School of Professional and Graduate Studies
The Purpose
The 2009 Heart of America
Ethics in Business Awards Program is designed to underscore the importance
of business ethics in Kansas City and to honor those businesses,
not-for-profit organizations, and individuals who practice and believe in
good ethics.
The Awards
Three awards will be
presented this year; one individual, one not-for-profit organization, and
one for-profit businesses. 2009 award recipient must demonstrate business
excellence and the highest standards of ethical conduct, integrity, and
civic and social responsibility.
The Event/Awards
Presentation
The 2009 Heart of America
Ethics in Business Awards will be presented on Thursday, May 7th, 2009, at 7:00
p.m. during the Awards Banquet at the Hyatt Regency Crown Center.
Beneficiaries
Proceeds from the event benefit Midwest Christian Counseling Center, which
is nationally accredited by the Samaritan Institute. Funds will be used to
support the Center’s mission, to subsidize the cost of counseling services
provided to clients with limited financial resources, and to further the
teachings of ethical business practices at Baker University’s School of
Professional and Graduate Studies.
Background
The
concept of the Ethics in Business Awards Program originated in 1991 when
Rev. R.J. Ross of the Samaritan Institute, Dr. Bruce Hutton of the
University of Denver’s Daniels College of Business, and Jeff Rundles, editor
of ColoradoBiz magazine teamed together to honor business persons and
companies exemplifying outstanding ethical practices. Since then, the Denver
program has evolved into an independent nonprofit organization called the
Colorado Ethics in Business Alliance with a major annual awards luncheon,
publications, and education offerings.
What is an Ethics in
Business Awards Program?
An
Ethics in Business Awards Program honors businesses, not-for-profit
organizations, and community leaders that stand apart in their dedication to
incorporate social responsibility in their employment practices, civic
activities, environmental concern, and ethical conduct. The program pays
tribute to those who “do well by doing good” through an annual
event sponsored by a host organization that makes awards to for-profit
businesses, not-for-profit organizations, and individuals. The program has a
cumulative effect, year by year increasing in community acceptance and
becoming a coveted recognition.
Why Should Midwest
Christian Counseling Center Be Interested?
Midwest Christian Counseling
Center is nationally accredited by the Samaritan Institute. Samaritan
Ministry is dedicated to the psychological, physical, and spiritual
well-being of individuals, families, and groups. What better way for this
to be expressed than in recognizing the influence of employment practices
and healthful working conditions on people’s mental health? When work life
and family life are improved, the mission of the Midwest Christian
Counseling Center is being advanced.
“We realize that a number of people we
counsel at Midwest obviously go to work each day. And we find that
companies that care about their employees provide support that is helpful in
that person’s healing process. Conversely, companies that show less regard
for their employees create additional stress and anxiety, oftentimes
becoming the problem themselves. At Midwest we want to recognize those
businesses and organizations that are supportive and encouraging of their
employees. This is significant in helping with the healing process, and we
want to do everything we can to support good mental health in the Kansas
City community.”

Midwest Christian
Counseling Center
1957-2009 . . . Midwest Christian
Counseling Center . . . Marking 52 years of quality psychological and
relationship care in the Greater Kansas City area!
History
Midwest has served greater
Kansas City continuously since its founding in 1957. It was one of the first
pastoral counseling centers established in the nation. For nearly half a
century, Midwest worked with thousands of people and continually
strives to treat each client with dignity and respect. The psychological,
relational and spiritual welfare of clients is our primary concern. We are
dedicated to helping individuals, couples and families achieve wholeness.
The Center offers a distinctive approach by bringing faith resources and
psychological skills to bear on the problems and challenges of living.
Outcomes
MCCC, fully accredited by
The Samaritan Institute, exists to foster greater health in individuals and
families. The Center aims to strengthen marriages and families and improve
the psycho-logical health of individuals so that domestic violence will
decline, children will enjoy better academic and emotional adjustment,
workers will be more productive, and the harmful effects of untreated
depression and anxiety will decrease.
Staff Qualifications
All of the Center’s
counselors hold graduate degrees and professional accreditation, and all
full time staff members are professionally licensed and belong to
professional associations that relate to their areas of specialization. Six
of the nine clinical staff have formal theological training from accredited
schools.
Not-for-Profit
Midwest Christian
Counseling Center is a not-for-profit organization and meets all 501(c)3
guidelines.
Why Raise Money?
Midwest Christian Counseling
Center seeks to serve all persons regardless of their financial resources.
While health insurance may help cover costs in some instances, of the total
number of clients seen, 20 are uninsured and pay a reduced fee; 2.3% of all
clients pay less than $50 per session. The value of charitable
services provided to clients not able to pay full fee totaled $60,000 this
past year. Increased support through contributions allows us to
provide treatment for a greater number of clients seeking our help.
